Connecting Setyl to AI clients with MCP

Setyl’s AI MCP Connector lets supported AI clients connect to Setyl using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

MCP access is enabled at the organization level, but each AI client connection is authorized by an individual Setyl user. Connected AI clients act with that user’s Setyl permissions.

You do not need a company API key or Consumer ID to use MCP.

Before you start

Before connecting an AI client, make sure:

  • Your Setyl plan supports the AI MCP Connector feature.
  • MCP access is available and enabled for your organization in Company Settings → API Service → AI MCP Connector.
  • You can sign in to the correct Setyl organization.
  • Your Setyl user has the permissions needed for the actions you want the AI client to perform.
  • Your AI client plan or workspace supports custom MCP connectors.
  • You have copied the Setyl MCP endpoint from Company Settings → API Service → AI MCP Connector.

The Setyl MCP endpoint usually looks like:

https://app.setyl.com/mcp

If your company uses a different Setyl environment, use the endpoint shown in Setyl.

How authorization works

When you add Setyl as an MCP connector, your AI client discovers Setyl’s OAuth configuration and starts a Setyl sign-in flow.

During authorization:

  1. The AI client opens a Setyl authorization page.
  2. You sign in to Setyl if needed.
  3. Setyl shows the organization that will be connected.
  4. You authorize the AI client.
  5. The AI client receives access through OAuth.
  6. Setyl records the connection for that specific user and AI client.

The AI client does not receive your Setyl password, company API keys, OAuth client secrets, or raw access tokens through the Setyl UI.

Connecting Claude

Claude supports custom remote MCP connectors.

The exact UI may vary by Claude plan and workspace type. In Claude Team or Enterprise workspaces, a workspace owner may need to add the connector first before members can connect it.

Add Setyl as a custom connector

  1. Open Claude.

  2. Go to Settings → Connectors.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Choose Add custom connector.

  5. Enter a name, for example:

    Setyl

  6. Paste the Setyl MCP endpoint:

    https://app.setyl.com/mcp

  7. Leave OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret empty unless Setyl support specifically provides them.

  8. Click Add.

Connect Claude to Setyl

  1. Open the Setyl connector in Claude.
  2. Click Connect.
  3. Claude opens the Setyl OAuth authorization flow.
  4. Sign in to Setyl if prompted.
  5. Check that the organization shown on the authorization screen is correct.
  6. Click Authorize.
  7. Return to Claude.

After connecting, Claude should show Setyl as connected and display Setyl tools.

Verify Claude can use Setyl tools

Start a new Claude chat and ask a simple question that matches your Setyl permissions, for example:

Find a user with the email address alex@example.com in Setyl.

or:

How many laptops are available for assignment in Setyl?

Claude may ask for permission before using a Setyl tool. Choose the permission level that matches your preference.

Connecting ChatGPT

ChatGPT support for custom MCP connectors depends on your plan, workspace and whether developer mode is available.

If you cannot see developer mode, custom connectors, plugins or apps in ChatGPT settings, your ChatGPT plan or workspace may not currently support this flow.

Enable developer mode if required

  1. Open ChatGPT.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Find Developer mode.
  4. Enable developer mode.

The exact location may vary. In some workspaces this is controlled by workspace administrators.

Add Setyl as a custom MCP connector

  1. Open the ChatGPT custom connector or plugin setup flow.

  2. Create a new custom connector/plugin.

  3. Enter a name, for example:

    Setyl

  4. Enter the Setyl MCP endpoint as the server URL:

    https://app.setyl.com/mcp

  5. Select OAuth as the authentication method.

  6. Leave manually editable OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret fields empty unless Setyl support specifically provides them.

  7. Review the discovered OAuth settings if ChatGPT shows them.

  8. Confirm that you understand the risks of connecting a custom MCP server.

  9. Create the connector.

Connect ChatGPT to Setyl

  1. Open the Setyl connector/plugin in ChatGPT.
  2. Click Connect or Sign in with Setyl.
  3. ChatGPT opens the Setyl OAuth authorization flow.
  4. Sign in to Setyl if prompted.
  5. Check that the organization shown on the authorization screen is correct.
  6. Click Authorize.
  7. Return to ChatGPT.

After connecting, ChatGPT should show Setyl as connected.

Verify ChatGPT can use Setyl tools

Ask a simple question that matches your Setyl permissions, for example:

Find a user with the email address alex@example.com in Setyl.

or:

What is the number of laptops available for assignment in Setyl?

ChatGPT may show that it used the Setyl connector or loaded Setyl tools.

Generic MCP client setup

Use this flow for other remote MCP-compatible clients.

  1. Add a new remote MCP server or custom connector.

  2. Use the Setyl MCP endpoint as the server URL:

    https://app.setyl.com/mcp

  3. Select OAuth authentication.

  4. Do not enter a Setyl API key.

  5. Do not enter a Consumer ID.

  6. Leave OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret empty if the client supports dynamic registration.

  7. Start the OAuth sign-in flow.

  8. Sign in to Setyl.

  9. Confirm the correct Setyl organization.

  10. Authorize the client.

  11. Verify that Setyl tools are discovered by the client.

A compatible MCP client should be able to discover Setyl’s OAuth metadata and complete the OAuth flow without backend changes in Setyl.

Selecting the correct Setyl organization

The Setyl authorization screen shows the organization that will be connected.

Before clicking Authorize, check the organization name carefully.

If the wrong organization is shown:

  1. Cancel or deny the authorization.
  2. Switch to the correct organization in Setyl.
  3. Start the connection flow again from your AI client.

The AI client will act with your Setyl permissions in the selected organization.

Reconnecting

Reconnect if:

  • the AI client says the connection expired;
  • the connection was revoked in Setyl;
  • the AI client cannot discover Setyl tools anymore;
  • you connected the wrong Setyl organization;
  • you removed and re-added the connector in the AI client.

To reconnect:

  1. Disconnect or remove the Setyl connector in the AI client.
  2. Add Setyl again using the Setyl MCP endpoint.
  3. Complete the Setyl OAuth authorization flow again.

Revoking access

You can revoke your own MCP connections in Setyl.

  1. Open Setyl.
  2. Go to Personal Settings → MCP Connections.
  3. Find the AI client connection.
  4. Click Revoke.

Organization owners can also review and revoke organization-wide MCP connections:

  1. Open Setyl.
  2. Go to Company Settings → API Service → AI MCP Connector.
  3. Click View connections.
  4. Find the connection.
  5. Click Revoke.

Revoking a connection prevents that AI client from using Setyl through MCP. If you want to use the client again later, reconnect it through the OAuth flow.

Disabling MCP for the organization

Organization owners can disable MCP access for the whole company in Company Settings → API Service → AI MCP Connector.

Disabling MCP revokes existing active MCP connections for the organization. Users will need to reconnect their AI clients if MCP is enabled again later.

Troubleshooting

OAuth authorization fails

Check that:

  • your Setyl plan supports the AI MCP Connector feature;
  • MCP access is available and enabled in Company Settings → API Service → AI MCP Connector;
  • you can sign in to Setyl normally;
  • your AI client supports remote MCP servers with OAuth;
  • you are using the MCP endpoint shown in Setyl;
  • you are not using a company API key or Consumer ID.

If the problem continues, remove the connector from the AI client and add it again.

The wrong Setyl organization is shown

Cancel or deny the authorization.

Switch to the correct organization in Setyl, then start the connection flow again from the AI client.

The AI client cannot discover Setyl tools

Check that:

  • the MCP endpoint is correct;
  • the endpoint is publicly reachable by the AI client;
  • MCP access is enabled in Setyl;
  • the connection has not been revoked;
  • your Setyl user is active and has access to the selected organization.

Then disconnect and reconnect the AI client.

The AI client says a tool is unavailable or fails with insufficient permissions

MCP tools respect the Setyl permissions of the user who authorized the connection.

If a tool is unavailable or cannot complete an action, check that your Setyl user has permission to perform that action in Setyl.

The connection expired or was revoked

Open your AI client and reconnect Setyl.

You may also check Personal Settings → MCP Connections in Setyl to confirm whether the connection is active or revoked.

The connector was removed from the AI client

Add the connector again using the Setyl MCP endpoint and complete the OAuth authorization flow again.
